Starting a food business

Encouraging new businesses and innovation is important to the Shire of Toodyay. If you are considering starting a food business, the Shire has a range of information to help guide you through the approvals process.

Health requirements for your food business

Whether you plan for your business to be permanent, mobile or temporary (for example, for an event), your business needs to comply with the Food Act 2008, Food Regulations 2009 and Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. For help navigating these requirements, please refer to the documents below.

Under the Food Act 2008, you will also need to complete Notification or Registration of the food business with the City.

What happens when you apply for approval?

Here is a summary of the process which follows your application for approval:

  • The Shire’s Environmental Health Officer will assess your registration form and supporting documentation;
  • You may be required to provide labelling and nutritional information for food products that are packaged;
  • An inspection will be arranged at your residential premises to ensure that the design of the property is suited to the proposed food handling activities;
  • If your application is approved and all other approvals are in place, at this stage you can proceed with trading and you will be issued with a Certificate of Registration.

Food trucks and mobile food vehicles
