We are all exposed to low levels of asbestos fibres in the air we breathe every day. Background levels in air usually contain 10 and 200 asbestos fibres in every 1000 litres (or cubic metre) of air. This means that a person may breathe up to 5000 fibres per day. It is very rare for an asbestos related disease to eventuate from this level of exposure. Some activities can periodically expose people to higher levels of asbestos fibres including household renovations, being in close proximity to demolitions of asbestos houses when not properly managed, or accident Asbestosal disturbance. Risk of disease increases with increased exposure.
