Main Roads Update - Toodyay Road Upgrade Project Commences

Main Roads Western Australia advise that NRW Contracting Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to reconstruct and realign Toodyay Road between Dryandra Road and Jingaling Brook Road. The works will also include the reconstruction of Jimperding Brook Bridge. NRW is expected to mobilise to site over March 2026. It is anticipated that these works will take some 18 months to complete.

Initial works for the project will include:
  • Locating and mobilising a works site.
  • Surveying to confirm the road boundary.
  • Liaising with landowners and communities.
Western Power commenced work in mid-February 2026 to relocate some power lines between Dryandra Road and Black Swamp Place just east of Morangup Road.
The shifting of the power lines is to facilitate the widening of Toodyay Road and will require some limited vegetation clearing.
Travellers and local residents will see some delays as the works will be under traffic management.
Machinery associated with vegetation removal and the shifting of the power lines will be present.
These works are anticipated to run through until the end of March.

Why is this project needed?
The Wheatbelt section of Toodyay Road has an unacceptable safety record. In the decade between 2011 and 2021 there have been 81 crashes, and 30 of these crashes have resulted in death or serious injury.
Concerns raised by the community have included the lack of passing lanes, the absence of right turn pockets at key intersections, inadequate intersection design, ageing infrastructure and poor geometry.
Although crash rates have fallen in recent years, the conditions of the road have not changed including narrow lanes, unsealed shoulders, limited sight distances at intersections, lack of safe overtaking opportunities, steep drop offs as well as large trees within metres of the road.

The project will:
  • Provide a more forgiving roadside environment, reducing the risk of serious crashes.
  • Ease congestion caused by heavy vehicles by improving intersections and providing safe overtaking opportunities,
  • Improve access to Toodyay and the surrounding Wheatbelt region.
