Toodyay’s Olympic torch

Our new Community Pavilion will soon be the home for the Sydney 2000 Olympic relay torch that has been a part of the Shire’s Corporate Collection since the conclusion of the Sydney Games. We appreciated the recent prompt by a community member and now we have the perfect place for it to be displayed.

It was in July 2000 when the late Carol Zimmerman (who passed away in 2008) carried this torch on its journey through the Avon Valley. Carol allowed the Shire of Toodyay to purchase her torch and it has been stored at the Shire Administration offices since then.

The design of the torch drew its inspiration from the Sydney Opera House, the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean and the subtle curve of the boomerang. It is made from sheet aluminium and stainless steel. Contained within it, is a fuel canister which held a combination of butane and propane gases to power the flame. We look forward to placing it in it’s new home soon at the Toodyay Recreation Centre.
