Message of Appreciation from Shire President - Recent Fire Emergencies

Published on Friday, 19 December 2025 at 10:50:17 AM

Following an incredibly demanding period for our region, I would like to extend grateful thanks to all the fire brigades, agencies, businesses, and individuals who supported our community during the recent fire incidents. While we regret to report the loss of two structures and several outbuildings, we are thankful that no primary residences were destroyed.

This response was a massive collaborative effort and we are very thankful for the support of Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) - Perth Hills and DFES (Goldfields/Midland and Metro Regions) during this time.

Our deepest thanks must go to all the Volunteer Brigades—with crews travelling from as far as Chidlow, South Coogee, Yanchep, and Tammin – and especially our local brigades:

  • Bejoording Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade
  • Coondle-Nunile Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade
  • Julimar Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade
  • Morangup Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade
  • Toodyay Central Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade
  • Toodyay Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service

Special thanks are extended to the Toodyay Bakery and the Salvation Army for their generous food donations which kept our volunteers sustained, and for the vital contribution of our local farmers and water carters who responded immediately to assist with fire suppression efforts.

We would also like to acknowledge the essential support from the following businesses:  Fire Mitigation Services, Avon Earthworks, Goodes Machinery and Toodyay Tyres.

Over the past several weeks an estimated 1,000 hectares have been impacted by fires across several locations, including:

  • Drummondi Dr (Majestic Heights) & Nairn Dr (Dumbarton)
  • McKnoe Dr, Fernie Rd & Avon Valley National Park (Morangup)
  • Toodyay-Bindi Bindi Rd (Coondle)
  • Plunkett Rd (Julimar) & Julimar State Forest
  • Deepdale Rd (West Toodyay)

As we are only at the beginning of the summer season, it is imperative that we all remain vigilant.

  • Safety First: If operating machinery in vegetated areas, ensure you have sufficient water supplies on hand to extinguish a fire immediately should one start.
  • Stay Informed: Regularly monitor Total Fire Bans (TFBs) and Harvest and Vehicle Movement Bans (HVMBs) – if you haven’t signed up to receive SMS notifications for TFBs and HVMBs please message BANS to 0408 017 439. Otherwise visit emergency.wa.gov.au for up-to-date fire information.

“It has been a challenging few weeks for everyone involved,” said Shire CESM, Sam Roberts. “The greatest gift the community can give our volunteers this season is a fire-free Christmas Day. Stay safe and stay alert.”
