Set within the Avon Valley region, the Shire of Toodyay is fortunate to have an abundance of local produce on its doorstep and many food businesses that utilise this beautiful fresh food.

The WA Health Department, the Public Health Association of WA, and the Cancer Council WA are requesting information of Toodyay’s Food businesses for a joint project. The project is funded by Healthway (2022-2024) and aims to develop and evaluate a 'Food Atlas' to map, measure and monitor food access across WA.

The Shire of Toodyay has been asked to provide information on their food businesses to the Telethon Kids Institute. This is to enable the Institute to develop a centralised register of WA food businesses across and within all jurisdictional boundaries throughout WA.

The proposed ‘Food Atlas’ would visualise and quantify the presence and location of all food businesses across jurisdictional boundaries throughout WA, creating a prototype that can be scaled to a national level.

The Telethon Kids Institute will then invite Local Governments to a series of ‘pilot testing’ workshops to provide feedback on the functionality, format, and utility of the ‘Food Atlas’, any additional food access metrics needed and the anticipated uptake of the tool.

What food business information do you need to provide?

You need to provide the Shire with any food business information that may need updating or may not have been formally required by the Shire in the past:

  • Operating name and address of the food business
  • Opening hours for the food business
  • A current menu or list of food produced by the food business

Food businesses are reminded of their responsibilities under the Food Act 2008 regarding their food business registrations and notifications. Please remember that any food business must be registered within the Shire of Toodyay and is required to advise the Shire of changes made to their food business within seven days of the relevant change. A food business is any business or activity that involves the handling of food for sale or the sale of food. This is regardless of if the handling of food is occasional or for a community or charitable nature.

Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the Shire on 9574 9300.
