Toodyay recently achieved the status of a recognised Wildflower Friendly Town. Although in its infancy, the scheme is designed to increase nature based tourism in Western Australia by encouraging local governments to protect our valuable wildflowers and native vegetation along roads and in nature reserves for the enjoyment of visitors and locals.
An assessment panel consisting of representatives from the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA), the Wildflower Society of Western Australia and the Office of the Minister for Tourism, Racing and Gaming; Small Business; Defence Issues; Citizenship and Multicultural Interests recently advised the Shire of Toodyay had achieved 'wildflower friendly’ status. The panel acknowledged the effort made by the Shire to provide information that addressed the schemes criteria and local government-led initiatives to conserve and promote wildflowers.
The Shire of Merredin was also successful and both Shires will receive additional marketing support from Tourism Western Australia (Tourism WA) aimed at driving visitors to key roads where wildflowers are likely to be found next year.
Tourism WA will begin work on website, wildflower map, social media and email newsletter content promoting the Shire ahead of the next wildflower season.
Minister Papalia congratulated the work the Shire of Toodyay is doing to conserve and protect wildflowers and native vegetation along roadside verges and reserves and looks forward to ongoing involvement in this important annual initiative.
