A lovely morning was had by Toodyay locals, amongst the scenic surrounds of the Recreation Centre, for the Shire’s Australia Day Breakfast and Citizenship Awards Ceremony on January 26.

Shire Councillors donned their finest aprons to cook up the free barbecue breakfast; while local community groups Avon Valley Shotokan, Toodyay Cricket Club and the Moondyne Men did a fantastic job of assisting at the event. Guests of honour included 2022 WA Senior Australian of the Year and 2023 Australia Day Ambassador Janice Standen; and Sandra Carr MLC, WA Labour Member for the Agricultural Region. Music was provided by talented string quartet North Street Music, and we have received overwhelming feedback on their wonderful performance.

Toodyay welcomed two new Australian Citizens on the day – Edith Botica and Chandre Stewart – and acknowledged winners across four categories in the 2023 Community Citizen of the Year Awards:

  • Citizen of the Year Award: Sandra Cousins
  • Youth Citizen of the Year Award:  Kyla Browne
  • Senior Citizen of the Year Award: Desraé and Wayne Clarke
  • Active Citizenship (Group or Event) Award: Toodyay District High School Parents and Citizens Association

Congratulations to all winners, and to their fellow nominees Avon Valley Shotokan, Adam O’Neil, Dean and Amanda Carter, Michael Morgan, and Wendy Austin. All of these individuals and groups have shown great dedication, commitment and effort in our community - we are very grateful to have them here in Toodyay.
