New John Forrest Exhibition - INSTITUTIONS COME TOGETHER TO HELP DEVELOP HERITAGE IN REGIONAL CENTRE

On 1 April 2012, the Shire of Toodyay proudly presents “John Forrest”, a new exhibition at the Newcastle Gaol Museum.

“John Forrest” follows the life of Western Australia’s “Grand Old Man.” A Surveyor, Explorer, Premier and Federal Treasurer, John Forrest’s life has had a profound impact in Western Australia’s development from an isolated British colony to a Federated state.  John Forrest started his long career in the Avon Valley, surveying and marking out roads and boundaries, and his hand-built survey cairns still dot the landscape to this day.

The exhibition has been developed by the Shire of Toodyay to be displayed in its dedicated Exhibitions Gallery within the iconic Newcastle Gaol Museum, however the success of this exhibition is due to the active involvement of several State institutions.

Photos, documents and reproductions were supplied by the Battye Library in Perth, who drew upon the extensive Crowley Collection of historical material relating to Forrest’s life. The State Records Office have also shown a great deal of support for the project, loaning the Shire Forrest’s original notebook of his surveys in the Toodyay Valley. The Western Australian Museum has also loaned three items to the exhibition, including memorial gifts to Forrest at the opening of the York Courthouse and the region’s connection to the Goldfield Water Scheme. Of particular note is the Western Australian Museum’s loan of a surveyor’s Theodolite from the Perth Works Department, a particularly rare scientific instrument that would have been used by early surveyors to map out the Western Australia’s landscape.

“The response from these state heritage institutions has been fantastic,” states the Shire President, Kevin Hogg. “The level of support that these groups have displayed when the Shire decided to develop a new heritage presentation shows the value of regional partnerships with Perth’s heritage institutions.”

“John Forrest” is one of several new exhibitions developed by the Shire of Toodyay in recent years as part of the ongoing upgrades to the Shire’s museums and development of heritage tourism.

The exhibition will run until 31 May 2012.

STATE ALERT SYSTEM

The State Government, in conjunction with the Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA), has launched the StateAlert program.

StateAlert is a free warning system, designed to provide emergency messages to residents whose property may be located in affected areas in the event of a life threatening emergency such as wildfire, flooding, cyclone, tsunami or even a chemical spill.

All residential landlines (home numbers), including silent numbers are automatically registered by the StateAlert System and mobile phones are automatically registered to the billing address of the owner. Residents however, are also able to register up to three additional addresses for other properties they may own, or those of family or friends.

Registration is a straight forward process carried out on the StateAlert website and can be updated or changed at any time should residents relocate.

This is a free service provided in the interest of giving communities the earliest possible warning to ensure residents can made adequate arrangements for the protection of property and the safety of lives. Further information is available from the StateAlert website at www.statealert.wa.gov.au
