Fire & Emergency Services
The fundamental elements for minimising the damage of bush fires to property, residents and the community are prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. The Shire of Toodyay plays an active role in all these elements.
Prevention
The Shire of Toodyay is responsible for the Administration of the Bush Fires Act (1954) in the district. The Shire of Toodyay, as with other districts of the State, has times when burning is either restricted or prohibited by law.
The times for the Restricted and Prohibited Burning Periods are published in the Shire’s Fire Break Order (see below). Residents should note that the restricted and prohibited periods may be extended due to unseasonal weather conditions. These will be advertised in newspapers circulated in the district, but if in doubt please contact the Shire of Toodyay or your local Bush Fire Control Officer. During the Restricted Burning Period a Permit must first be obtained from a Fire Control Officer.
There is also a requirement by law for rural and townsite property owners to install firebreaks. The specific requirements are dependent on the location and size of the property. Please refer to the Fire Break Order (see below) for details or contact Ranger Services on 9574 4555 if you have any questions.
Be Prepared
Residents are responsible for their own safety and must be prepared for an emergency fire situation. Information to assist you with preparing your property and family for bushfires is available from the Shire Administration Centre or visit the Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) website for a wealth of advice and information.
Response
Five Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades and a Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service Brigade operate in the Shire of Toodyay and respond to fire incidents. The Shire of Toodyay’s Rangers assist in the coordination of responses to fire incidents, and other emergencies.
Local Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades are always interested in gaining the support of the community and welcome new volunteers in a range of roles. To find out how you can become involved, please contact your local Brigade (see Community & Sporting Groups) for details.
Recovery
The Shire of Toodyay ensures that the community recovers from major traumatic events such as bushfires by ensuring that infrastructure is restored and by supporting individuals and groups in a range of recovery programs and services.
