The keeping of horses is generally classified as one of the following land uses:
- Animal Establishment
- Animal Husbandry – Intensive
- Rural Pursuit
- Equestrian Facility
Can I keep horses on my block?
Depending on there being no specific subdivision restrictions in the area in which you live, the keeping of horses which are not for trade or commercial purposes, and comply with the Department of Agriculture and Food’s Stocking Rate Guidelines for Small Rural Holdings, do not require planning approval from the Shire.
Development approval is not required for properties which are zoned rural.
When the Shire considers an application to keep horses, the application is assessed against the requirements of the Department of Agriculture Stocking Rate Guidelines for Rural Small Holdings Swan Coastal Plain and Darling Scarp
